Teeth fade with age

Young children have snow-white teeth. But adults’ teeth are a lot darker.

Why is this? The first cause is tarnish. Red wine, coffee, tea, smoking and the dyes in our food cause deposits to build up on the teeth. Over time, these deposits penetrate the tooth. Then discolouration occurs.

The second factor is the dentin (dentine) that sits under the tooth enamel. This colours darker as you get older. In adult teeth, there is more dentin. And this can be seen through the tooth enamel as yellowing. So it is good to realise that this discolouration comes from within.

Different methods of whitening

Fortunately, there is something you can do about yellow teeth. Having them whitened can restore a fresh, youthful smile. There are different ways people try to whiten teeth. We list them for you here (not exhaustive). You may have already tried one of them..

‘Whitening’ toothpaste

There are all kinds of whitening toothpastes on the market. These can help remove tarnish from your teeth. It is important to note that these toothpastes cannot correct tooth discolouration, they only work on deposits that are on the outside on the tooth enamel.

Getting started with hydrogen peroxide yourself (don’t!)

This bleaching agent is powerful, but you need to apply it properly. Several influencers can be seen on TikTok rubbing highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide on their teeth on their own. Don’t do that! If used incorrectly, it can cause irritation to gums and mucous membranes.

Bleaching gels and UV light

This method involves applying gel to the teeth. This can be gel with a very low dose of hydrogen peroxide (less than 0.1%), charcoal, baking soda or various other products. The teeth are then sometimes still ‘dried out’ with a special UV lamp. In any case, a consequence of dehydration is that teeth become whiter, but it can also make them sensitive and dehydration makes the whiteness shorter-lasting.

Responsible bleaching at the dentist

The most effective way to make discoloured teeth white again is to remove the cause. This means bleaching the yellowed dentin in the teeth. With bleaching, you break down the molecules that cause the discolouration. The dentist can take care of that for you with the right dose of hydrogen peroxide. In the process, the natural acidity (pH) is temporarily increased. This strengthens and accelerates the bleaching process and prevents your teeth from drying out. This method is safe. And the beautiful results are long-lasting..

So how does it work?

The dentist will examine your mouth to assess whether your teeth and gums are healthy. If they are, you can safely use the home whitening method.

An impression of your teeth will be taken for a bit that fits very precisely around your teeth (and therefore does not leak onto the gums). When the bit is ready, you return to the practice. Then the dentist or oral care professional will show you how to apply the bleaching gel in the bit and place it in your mouth. This way, your gums and mucous membranes are excellently protected. The secret to this method is the bleaching gel. It contains a responsible level of hydrogen peroxide that works, and the paste simultaneously maintains – or even temporarily increases – the pH level in your mouth. As a result, your teeth will not dry out or become sensitive and the duration of bleaching is thus shortened.

You determine the desired result

You continue the bleaching process at home while watching Netflix or sleeping. You wear the bit with the gel for 30-60 minutes a day: evening before bedtime is best, when you no longer eat or drink.

Together with the dentist or oral care professional, you determine the current colour of your teeth to compare the result later. Repeating the process of bleaching daily reinforces the process of whitening and radiantly white teeth. Thus, the result occurs gradually. After about seven sessions at home by the TV, you will already see results. You continue until you find that your teeth are white enough. If necessary, you can freshen your teeth after a few years. You can then feel free to use the custom-made bit again and simply do so at home.
